Map Code: Ax01387The data taken from the 1990s census shows that the US has its highest concentration of residents of Hispanic origins in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Florida, Illinois, New York and New Jersey. Hispanic origin is taken to mean an individual’s birthplace, parents’ birthplace, or grandparent’s birthplace in a Hispanic country. Of the top eight states, the southern border states are dominated by Mexicans, as is the midwestern state of Illinois, where most the Mexican population live in Chicago. Since 1990, the Mexican population in Chicago has grown to exceed that of Houston and San Antonio, Texas. The main Hispanic populations in Florida are Cuban and Puerto Rican, while in the northeast they are mostly Puerto Rican. Other Hispanic populations are from Latin American countries such as Nicaragua, Bolivia and El Salvador. Mainland Spanish are also considered to be Hispanic.
